CTU 2015 Summer Youth Employment Program

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam (CTU) is seeking qualified, enthusiastic youth with appropriate background to do various tasks related to cataloging and archival of documentation, audio and visual media detailed below during the summer of 2015 (1 June 2015 through 31 Aug 2015). This will provide a great opportunity to develop your organizing and cataloging skills, technical skills as well as sharpen your knowledge in Carnatic music.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

  • Students attending High School in the State of Illinois as of 31 Aug 2015
  • Incoming High School freshmen in Fall 2015
  • Class of 2015 graduates

    • A signed form from the principal of your High School in the State of Illinois.

Youth Employment Time Period: 1 June 2015 through 31 Aug 2015

Applications Accepted: 22 May 2015 through 30 June 2015.

Youth Employee Positions

  1. CTU Concerts Cataloging Intern – Cataloging and documentation of concerts, songs, raga, thalam and special notes. Knowledge of Carnatic music system is required in addition to writing, computer and some word processing skills.
  2. CTU Photo Archival Intern – Sorting, scanning, organizing, and digitizing old photographs that are in print and film form from the several years prior to digital photography and cataloging them by identifying artists and accompanist descriptions and concert details for concerts. In addition, CTU would like you to identify other critical events of the Utsavam and catalogue important and long term attendees. Knowledge of the Utsavam festival is required in addition to image scanning, writing, some computer file organizational and word processing skills. Knowledge of Carnatic music system would be preferred.
  3. CTU Audio Archival Intern – Sorting old audio recordings of concerts and performances from magnetic tape medium to digital hard disks and DVDs. Cataloging the concerts, identifying each song, ragam, thalam, composer and duration. Has to coordinate and collaborate with CTU Concerts Cataloging Intern. Knowledge of Carnatic music system is required in addition to image scanning, writing, some computer file organization and word processing skills.

Application and Selection Process

Candidates will submit a brief resume (500 words or less) with relevant experience / knowledge highlighted between 22 May and 15 June 2015. Candidates will be filtered based on required base knowledge and experience through telephonic interviews and final face-to-face interviews as required.

Youth Employee Responsibilities

  1. CTU Concerts Cataloging Intern
    • Apply Carnatic music knowledge to cataloging and documentation of concerts, songs, raga, thalam and special notes.
    • Work under the direction and supervision of Senior volunteers of CTU
    • Time reporting and keep supervisor apprised of progress.
  2. CTU Photo Archival Intern
    • Apply Carnatic music field knowledge in sorting, scanning, organizing, and digitizing old photographs that are in print and film form from the several years prior to digital photography and cataloging them with artists and accompanists descriptions and concert details for concerts.
    • Identification of critical events of the Utsavam and cataloging important and long-term attendees.
    • Time reporting and keep supervisor appraised of progress
  3. CTU Audio Archival Intern

Activity Location
Some meetings will be held at the registered address of the organization. Training and status review work will occur at the residence of the supervisors. Most of the work is expected to be take-home work for the interns.
