Chetulara

About Chetulara:

Chetulara is a composition of Saint Tyagaraja in Bhairavi where he describes in great detail the beauty of Rama. This is rendered exclusively as an instrumental piece before the Pancharatnam group rendition. The ensemble would consist of traditional melody instruments and a mridangam accompaniment. The song will be played in D-sharp. We have a limited seating capacity for Chetulara, and will only be able to accommodate 6-7 melody instrumentalists and a maximum of 2 accompanying percussionists each year.

Guidelines for participation:

  1. Students under the age of 22 can register for Chetulara.
  2. At the time of registration the student should know to play Chetulara, OR the Ata tala varnam in Bhairavi – Viriboni, OR any other keerthana in Bhairavi on their instrument with ease.
  3. All registered participants should learn the song from a recording and notation we will provide upon registration, and the teacher, Aparna Sunder will go through each sangati during the practice sessions and advise corrections.
  4. Students should have sufficient command of the melody instrument they are playing, and should be able to execute the corrections and fine nuances that the teacher vocalizes for them.
  5. Selection to perform on stage for the Utsavam in May will depend on an audition at the end of April.
