CTU 2014 Scribbles – Call for Submissions

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam is planning to publish the CTU 2014 Scribbles magazine that highlights creations by CTU children in their own writing.  CTU invites children to submit their own creations for publication in this magazine.

Scribbles includes the following creations by CTU children:

  1. Hand Written Kritis: Lyrics of the Kritis performed by the student at the Utsavam
  2. Hand written Slokams: 5 slokas from the CTU Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram or 4 slokas from Hanuman Chalisa
  3. Visual art: Art drawn by participating students illustrating their submission.
  4. Student Experience: The student’s experience with CTU practice activities.

Note:All handwritten submissions must be in an Indian language script.

Updated 13 May, 2014: Scribbles could also include creations from CTU children participating in various volunteering activities including helping out in the kitchen, stage setup and dismantling, crowd control, ushering, helping carrying items from one location to another, pasting signs and posters on the walls and several other activities that make it a fun experience overall.  Children are encouraged to turn in their submissions in their own words in English.

Submission Deadline: Friday, May 16, 2014

What to submit

Submissions can include any of the following:

  • One hand-written krithi OR One hand-written sloka set
  • Visual Art supporting the krithi or sloka set submission
  • Students can also share their Student Experience as described below.

Note: Given the limited space available, CTU will determine the actual number of submissions published based upon various criteria including the clarity and quality of submissions and breadth of coverage.

Prepare to Submit

Handwritten Kritis

  • Print this CTU 2014 Scribbles Submission Form.
  • Fill out the top block in Roman (English) BLOCK LETTERS.
  • In the body of the form, hand-write in an Indian script, the Kriti or slokas YOU will perform at the Utsavam. Submissions written in Roman (English) script will not be accepted.
  • Consult a standard text book or the WEB to verify correctness for Krithi.
  • Consult the CTU Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram to verify correctness for the sloka.
  • Write neatly and DECORATE your form to the best of your ARTISTIC ability.
  • Use ink or a dark lead pencil.
  • Scan the original.

Visual Art

  • In addition to the handwritten Kriti mentioned above, you may create a Visual Art (drawing) to illustrate your Kriti. You cannot submit Visual art without a Kriti or Sloka set.
  • Scan the original.

Handwritten Content and Visual Art

Please send the Student Name, Teacher Name, Age, Krithi, Raga and Tala along with a scanned image of the handwritten content to ctuscribbles {AT} gmail {dot} com.

Student Experience

This is open to present and past students who have performed at CTU. You may submit your CTU experience as described below.

  • Pick one CTU practice activity of your choice from the following: Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram, Pancharatnam, Utsava Sampradaya Krithis, Divya Nama Sankeerthanams, Geetharthamu, Chetulara, Hanuman Chalisa and Kolattam.  Update May 13, 2014: Volunteering & Kolattam are additional choices that have been added.
  • Explain your view. Prepare your responses to the following questions in 250 characters or less (including spaces) a) Why is this your favorite CTU practice activity? And b) Why do you like coming to CTU?

On DAY-1 of the Utsavam COLLECT YOUR COPY of the CHILDREN’S Magazine with YOUR name on it.

Please note:

    • CTU will be publishing a limited number of copies of Scribbles that will be distributed to those children who submit entries and are there in person to pick up their copies at the Memorial Day music festival.
    • CTU will process submissions on a first-come first-serve basis.
    • Only those submissions that follow all the applicable steps outlined in the Submission Process will be considered for publication.
    • Submissions must be clear and legible to be considered for publication.
    • There is a limit on the number of submissions that can be accommodated within Scribbles each year.
