CTU 2020 Homage To Tyagaraja Virtual Dance sessions

As part of the #CTU2020 virtual programs over multiple weekends this summer, Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam is glad to announce the Homage To Tyagaraja Virtual Dance Sessions.

These sessions are a compilation of video recordings of Tyagaraja compositions submitted by Dance Schools around the world using the Registration Process below.

CTU will be showcasing a limited number of video submissions within a few weeks after the Registration Deadline.  

Song List Submission Deadline: Fri, Jul 3, 2020

Registration Deadline. Sun, July 19, 2020

Duration of the video recording:

  • Not more than 10 minutes per participant
  • Not more than 60 minutes per school

Registration Process

  1. Review. Please see Participation Guidelines, Video Recording Guidelines and Video Processing Criteria below.
  2. Select Compositions. 
    • Select a list of Tyagaraja Compositions (not applicable for Percussion based dances) Please note duration of Video Recording.
    • Send this list of Tyagaraja compositions by email to ctu {dot} dance {at} ChicagoTyagarajaUtsavam {dot} org by Song List Submission Deadline.
  3. Record . Upon receiving CTU approval for the list of Tyagaraja compositions, record your video using the Video Recording Guidelines provided  and ensure that the product is final and complete.
  4. Upload. Please upload your video to a private location of your choice. Please do not share the link to this video with anyone before this CTU program is broadcast. 
  5. Submit. The recording must be submitted by the Teacher by providing the information requested below. 

Participation Guidelines. 

  • Submissions are welcome from dance schools around the world.
  • Dance schools must have at least 50 students.
  • Submissions are welcome in Bharthanatyam, Kuchupudi, or similar classical Indian dance forms
  • Participants must be at Varnam level or higher in their Classical Dance Curriculum
  • Participants can be part of the video recordings submitted by one dance school only.
  • If multiple video recordings are submitted by the same dance school, the latest one submitted will be used for the program  

Video Recording Guidelines

  • Video recordings may be submitted by individuals and groups based on the following guidelines
    • Format. Recordings must be named in the following format 
      • CTU2020_Homage_Dance_FirstName_LastName_CompositionName
    • Technical Specifications. Recording must conform to the specifications below:
      • MP4 (MPEG Layer-4 Audio/Video)
      • Landscape mode (if it is being recorded on a phone, please hold the phone horizontally and not vertically)
      • Preferred Resolution – 720p to 1080p
      • Accessible link to recording that is not in a publicly accessible location like YouTube
    • Information. Recordings must be of professional quality and must include the following
      • Credit attributed to all artists as per copyright regulations.
      • Information about the dance school including description of the artistic director
      • 1-2 pictures to be used for promotion of the performance.
    •  Content. Video recordings (up to 60 minutes from each school) must follow the guidelines below: 
      • Teacher Introduction/Introductions (Under 10 minutes explaining performances and themes)
      • Individual Student Submissions (No single student may dance for more than 10 minutes)
      • Teacher may put together multiple participants through videography into a single composition (Eg.  Different student dancing parts of a Pancharathna krithi put together using videographic software)
      • Teachers may submit all 60 minutes as one edited compilation or the pieces individually with short 1-2 minute intros.
      • Content must be freshly recorded and cannot include dance recordings made prior to May 15, 2020.
      • Credits to Musical Artists, Participants, Choreographers, Schools are required
    •  Venue. 
      • Preference will be given for videos shot outdoors in a sunny green setting with minimal distractions. Well lighted clean home/studio type settings are also acceptable.
      • Music on video should be professional as well as clear.
      • Participants should be dressed in a appropriate dance attire usually worn during performances including full make-up as per school regulations.
      • Students should also wear appropriate bells for the performance as is normal per school rules.
      • Participants are welcome to use audio equipment including microphones, video cameras, and lighting as appropriate for the recording. Front lighting is the key to clear dance videography.

Video Processing Criteria

CTU will be showcasing a limited number of video submissions based upon the following criteria. Please note that videos may be cut (at the 10-min mark with total allowable content capped at 60 min per school) or edited as appropriate to conform to CTU guidelines. Video content will have a short life on CTU channels but will become proprietary to the Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam and the Dance School..  

  • Conformance to the participation and video recording guidelines provided above
  • Effort required to cut or edit the submissions to conform to these guidelines
  • Programming and scheduling constraints
  • Timely submission of the Tyagaraja Compositions by the Song List Submission Deadline
  • Timely submission by the Registration Deadline
  • Audio and visual quality of the video recording
  • Presence of audio or visual distractions in the video
  • Duration of the video recording
