CTU 2020 – Homage To Tyagaraja Virtual Music Sessions

As part of the #CTU2020 virtual programs over multiple weekends this summer, Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam is glad to announce the Homage To Tyagaraja Virtual Music Sessions.

These sessions are a compilation of video recordings of Tyagaraja compositions submitted by participants around the world using the Registration Process below.

CTU will be showcasing a limited number of video submissions within a few weeks after the Registration Deadline.  

Registration Deadline. Registration closed on Fri, June 12, 2020. Thank you to everyone who submitted their entries before the Registration Deadline.

Duration of the video recording: Not more than 5 minutes per participant.

Registration Process

  1. Review. Please see Participation Guidelines, Video Recording Guidelines and Video Processing Criteria below.
  2. Prepare. 
    • Obtain your Teacher’s approval to submit a video.
    • Select the Tyagaraja Composition (not applicable for Percussion solos) Please note duration of Video Recording.
    • Confirm the list of participants if it is a group performance.
  3. Record . Record your video using the Video Recording Guidelines provided  and ensure that the product is final and complete.
  4. Upload. Please upload your video to a private location of your choice. Please do not share the link to this video with anyone before this CTU program is broadcast. 
  5. Submit. Please submit the information requested below by the Registration Deadline.

Participation Guidelines. 

  • Submissions are welcome from participants around the world.
  • Participants must be at Varnam level or higher in their Carnatic Music Curriculum
  • Participants must get the approval of their Music Teacher to submit a video recording
  • Participants may submit one Video Recording — individual or group in a single art form of their choice (vocal, instrument, percussion etc.). Participants may provide accompaniments across multiple submissions.
  • If multiple video recordings are submitted by the same participant or group, the latest one submitted will be used for the program  
  • Submissions must be Tyagaraja compositions 

Video Recording Guidelines

  • Video recordings may be submitted by individuals and groups based on the following guidelines
    • Videos must have been recorded on or after 28 May 2020
    • Recordings must be named in the following format 
      • CTU2020_Homage_Music_FirstName_LastName_CompositionName
    • Recording must conform to the specifications below:
      • MP4 (MPEG Layer-4 Audio/Video)
      • Landscape mode (if it is being recorded on a phone, please hold the phone horizontally and not vertically)
      • Preferred Resolution – 720p to 1080p
      • Accessible link to recording that is not in a publicly accessible location like YouTube
    • Multiple family members and friends may be part of the recording while adhering to Social Distancing guidelines
    • Background must be white or beige (neutral color) with no visual distractions (e.g. printed text, unrelated graphics or pictures)
    • Participants should be dressed in a culturally appropriate attire usually worn during CTU festivals
    • Participants should be seated on the floor on a proper mat or other similar floor covering
    • Participants are welcome to use audio equipment including microphones as appropriate for the recording

Video Processing Criteria

CTU will be showcasing a limited number of video submissions based upon the following criteria. Please note that videos may be cut (at the 5-min mark) or edited as appropriate to conform to CTU guidelines.  

  • Number of participants ( Groups with multiple family members and/or friends will be given a higher preference over Individuals )
  • Conformance to the participation and video recording guidelines provided above
  • Effort required to cut or edit the submissions to conform to these guidelines
  • Programming and scheduling constraints
  • Timely submission by the Registration Deadline
  • Audio and visual quality of the video recording
  • Presence of audio or visual distractions in the video
  • Duration of the video recording
