CTU 2020 Chetulara Performance

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam is glad to announce the Chetulara performance by a group of children on instruments before the Pancharatna Kritis are performed on the first day of the Memorial Day 2020 music festival – Saturday, 23 May 2020. We are looking for a balanced combination of children playing various instruments including Veenai, Flute and Violin for this performance.

Participation Requirements

  • Applicants must be between 10 and 20 years old as of the Memorial Day weekend.
  • Applicants must be able to play one of the following:
    • Chetulara
    • Bhairavi Ata Tala Varanam (Viriboni)
    • Any Krithi in Bhairavi Raga (Pallavi, Charanam and Anupallavi)
  • Percussionists must demonstrate their ability to provide accompaniment for any 2-kalai Adi Thalam composition.
  • The pitch for the CTU Chetulara performance is D-sharp (2.5).
  • Participants must attend the Chetulara practice sessions on a regular basis and be open to corrections in order for the CTU Chetulara Team to deliver a well-coordinated, synchronized, high-quality performance.

Stage Performance

  • The final list of participants on stage will be determined based on various factors including:
    • Ability to play Chetulara solo by the last practice session in Apr 2020 
    • Precision and quality of the individual performance of the participant
    • Ability to perform in synchrony with the rest of the group
    • Regularity in attendance.

Practice Schedule

  • At the request of CTU, Aparna Sunder will be teaching Chetulara during these practice sessions.
  • Chetulara practice sessions will be held from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM on the same dates and at the same venue where the CTU Pancharatnam Sessions are held.  The practice session dates will be updated on the CTU Calendar.
  • CTU will be conducting regular, intense group practice sessions to train the selected children on Chetulara. Participants must attend the practice sessions on a regular basis and be open to corrections in order for the group of children to come out with a well-coordinated, synchronized, high-quality performance.
  • If you are an out-of-town participant interested in learning remotely, please refer to the Remote Learning Guidelines published under Education->Other->Remote Learning. Out-of-town participants must attend at least two practice sessions in person before the Memorial Day festival. Please send an e-mail to the address provided at the end of this announcement for more specific guidelines on Remote Learning for the CTU Chetulara performance.
