CTU 2018 Competition FAQ

Please review the Q&A below before sending any questions you have to CtuComp {AT} ChicagoTyagarajaUtsavam {DOT} org. This FAQ will be updated on a regular basis.

What must I do to register for the competition?

 A. You must do the following to register for the competition :

  • Review the list of Kritis
  • Record your demo entry and
  • Register for the competition
  • Upload your demo entry while registering for the competition.

Can the Registration Deadline for the competition be extended?

A. The Registration Deadline is determined based upon various factors including the time frame that the contestants selected to participate in the Live Competition are announced.  The deadline might be extended at CTU’s discretion but it is in the best interest of the contestants to submit their entries by the Registration Deadline originally announced.  

How do I determine the Level at which my child should perform?

A. This is a decision to be made by the teacher of the child in question.

If a Contestant is not selected for Level 4, can they perform at Level 3?

A.  No. Contestants selected to perform in the Live Competition must perform at the levels they specify at the time of registration.

Can a contestant select a song from Level 3 or Level 4 and perform at Level 2?

A. No. The contestant has to participate in the Level corresponding to the song selected.

Can we change our selections after submitting them?

A. Yes. You may change the Kritis or Talams for all Levels any number of times through the CTU Competition Registration Deadline. You may not change the Kritis or Talams after the CTU Competition Registration Deadline.

Is there a separate category for each instrument or are all instruments judged together?

A. As mentioned in the announcement, the three categories are Vocal, Instrument and Percussion. All instruments (including violin, veena, flute, keyboard, saxophone etc.) are judged together in the Instrument category.

I am getting an error message when submitting the demo entry.  What do I do?

A. For some reason, in certain cases an error message is displayed.  We are looking into this problem.  If you encounter this error, we apologize for the inconvenience caused and request you to take the following steps:

  • Right click on your MP3 file and select Properties and click on the Details Tab.’
  • Click on “Remove Properties and Personal Information”
  • Select the option to “Remove the following properties from this file”
  • Select All
  • Click OK
  • Resubmit the entry

If this still does not work, please send us an e-mail with the image of the information you entered as well as the MP3 file recording and we will submit the entry for you.

Can I get feedback on why my demo entry was not selected?

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam appreciates you submitting a demo entry for the Music Competition.  Please understand that we do not share any feedback with the contestants.
