CTU 2011 Chetulara Performance

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam is glad to announce the Chetulara performance by a group of children on instruments before the Pancharatna Kritis are performed on the first day of the Memorial Day 2011 music festival – Saturday, 28 May 2011.  We are looking for a healthy combination of children playing the Veenai, Flute and Violin for this performance.

CTU requests children interested in being part of this performance to provide the following information by e-mail to ctucomp@gmail.com by 31 Jan 2011.  The subject line of the e-mail should be CTU 2011 Chetulara.

  • First and last name of the child
  • First and last name of the parents
  • First and last name of the teacher (s)
  • Residential address
  • Phone Number
  • Does this child sing or play an instrument? If so, what instrument?
  • Name, Ragam and Thalam for the Krithi or Varnam recorded
  • MP3 recording as specified below

MP3 Recording Specification

The MP3 recording must not contain any narration by the child.  It should only contain the recording of the piece being submitted.  The name of the MP3 recording file must be in the following format:

CTU_2011_CL_Name of Instrument_First Initial_Last Initial_Krithi or Varnam name_Ragam name.mp3

Instrumentalists

If you have been already trained by CTU on Chetulara in 2010, please send in a recording of your complete rendition of Chetulara.

If you have not been trained by CTU on Chetulara in 2010, please send an MP3 recording of an Ata Tala Varnam in 2 speeds.

Mridangists

All children interested in providing Mridangam accompaniment must send a recording of their accompaniment to Chetulara or any Kriti having a similar structure to Chetulara in 2 Kalai Adi Thaalam starting after 1.5 beats.

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam can accommodate only a limited number of participants in the Chetulara performance due to various constraints. CTU will work with professional musicians to evaluate the recordings and determine the team of children selected to render this Krithi.

CTU may not be in a position to accommodate children who do not send all the information requested by the date specified above.

CTU will be conducting regular, intense practice sessions to train the selected children on Chetulara that will start during the months leading up to the Utsavam. Participants must attend the practice sessions on a regular basis and be open to corrections in order for the group of children to come out with a well-coordinated, synchronized, high-quality performance.

CTU is looking into options available for remote participation in these practice sessions for out-of-town participants.  Out-of-town participants must attend at least two practice sessions in person before the Memorial Day festival.
