How to participate?
Participation is a 3 step process:
- Complete the registration form (link provided below) anytime between May 19th to June 30th, 2007.
- Submit a demo entry to ctucompetition{at}tyagaraja-chicago{dot}org in MP3 format, no other format accepted, to reach us on or before June 30th, 2007.
- If your entry is selected by the judges you will get to perform live on Oct 6th, 2007.
Who can participate?
Students in K-12 school grade in Fall 2007 can participate.
Categories: Vocal, Instrument, and Percussion.
This year, CTU has worked with professional musicians to determine a set of Kritis for various levels. The Kriti(s) selected by the contestant determines the level at which they compete in the Vocal/Instrumental category.
All contestants must submit one demo entry for each category/level they compete in.
Levels for Vocal/Instrument Category
- Level 1 – Select 1 kriti from the CTU list for this level. Submit demo entry. Perform this entry in the Live Competition.
- Level 2 – Select 2 kritis from the CTU list for this level. Submit one of these entries as the demo entry. Perform one of these entries in the Live Competition as directed by the judges. Judges may engage the contestants in interactive Q&A during the Live Competition.
- Level 3 – Select 3 kritis from the CTU list for this level. Submit one of these entries as the demo entry. Perform portions of any of the three Kritis in the Live Competition as directed by the judges. Judges may engage the contestants in interactive Q&A during the Live Competition.
Levels for Percussion Category
- Level 1 – Single nadai starting on samam in tala of your choice
- Level 2 – Two nadais OR off-samam eduppu in tala of your choice. Judges may request the contestants to say (Konnakkol) selected portions of what they played during the Live Competition.
- Level 3 – Multiple nadais AND off-samam eduppu in tala of your choice. Judges may request the contestants to say (Konnakkol) selected portions of what they played and engage them in interactive Q&A during the Live Competition.
Solo entries only. No accompaniments are allowed.
Registration:
Registration will be open from May 19th to June 30th, 2007. A contestant can take part in multiple categories and levels. For each category and level a separate registration, and subsequent demo entry, has to be submitted.

Demo Entry:
Demos must be in MP3 format and can be emailed to ctucompetition{at}tyagaraja-chicago{dot}org on or before June 30th, 2007. Please record the contestant name, song name, ragam, thalam on one track and the MP3 recording on a separate track. Please note that CTU requires timely receipt of both the web registration as well as the demo entry for successful processing.
Live Competition:
Professional artists, with no ties to CTU, will be ranking the demo entries. Based on their ranking CTU will select the contestants to perform at the live competition on Oct 6th.
Prizes:
Prizes are awarded to the winners of the live competition. These can include trophies, certificates, and cash ($250 for the First Prize for each level/category).
