Introducing CTU 2019 Maa Kolam Workshop

Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam invites girls/boys, men/women to participate in the first ever CTU Maa Kolam Workshop to learn and practice the traditional techniques of putting Maa Kolam as part of our festivities.  In 2018, CTU introduced the practice of putting the Maa Kolam outdoors right at the point where our colorful procession begins early morning.  In 2019, CTU is providing an opportunity for everyone interested in getting trained to put Maa Kolam.

Participation Guidelines

  • Participants have to be at least 5 years of age
  • Participants can attend one or both sessions depending upon their skill level.

Curriculum

At the request of Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam, Smt. Aparna Sunder will be conducting these sessions at her residence in the Naperville area.

  • Session 1 ( Beginners ) on Sat, 30 Mar 2019, 3 PM to 5 PM
    • This session will be held indoors
    • Instructions on how to make rice batter
    • Start by drawing a level-appropriate design on paper.
    • Then, learn the technique of using rice batter to draw it on a 2 ft x 2 ft tile. 
  • Session 2 ( Advanced ) on Sun, 31 Mar 2019, 1 PM to 3 PM
    • This session will be held indoors and outdoors. (Note: session will be re-scheduled in case of inclement weather)
    • Open only to participants who already have some familiarity and experience putting small kolams on paper
    • Instructions on how to make rice batter
    • Open for participants who are willing to advance their skill to the next level.

Materials Needed 

  1. Wide mouthed bowl to store the rice batter (approximately the size of a soup bowl)
  2. One small piece of clean, cotton, rag fabric (approximately 4″ x 4″)
  3. One hand towel
  4. 2 ft x 2 ft tile with a dark background 
  5. One Notebook
  6. A Pen or Pencil

All participants are encouraged to practice their work and send the images to be considered for display during the CTU procession held during the Memorial Day Festival.  Participants will be informed about next steps as appropriate depending upon the number of spots available to display the artwork.
