Pancharatna Kritis

Among the different themes of Pancharatna Kritis composed by Saint Tyagaraja on the presiding deities of various temples, the Ghana raga Pancharatna Kritis – named after the 5 majestic ragas they are composed in, are the most popular. They are sung in the annual Tyagaraja Aradhana of Thiruvaiyaru – the birthplace of the composer, and thereafter in Thyagaraja Aradhana across the world. They are the flagship performances on the first day of the CTU Festival held each year during the Memorial Day Weekend.

These kritis of Saint Tyagaraja have extremely meaningful lyrics referencing significant stories, sages, characters and parts from our scriptures.

Sri Ganapathini is a kriti on Ganesha which is traditionally sung before the Pancharatnams. The goal of singing this entire set of compositions as a group is for the performers and audience to enjoy and appreciate the sahitya and bhava.

Soon after the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram, there will be a group rendition of the Pancharatna kritis by children and adults in G and C shrutis. Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam has standardized the manner in which these kritis are rendered. We welcome everyone to attend the practice session and listen and learn per the CTU standard.
