Utsava Abhivandanam heralds 2012 CTU Music Festival

The 2012 Utsava Abhivandanam function was held at the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Lemont, IL on Sat, Apr 14. This function heralded the arrival of this year’s Chicago Tyagaraja Utsavam Music Festival during the Memorial Day weekend.

Asianet is going to broadcast this Utsava Abhivandanam function on Saturday, Apr 21 at 12 noon Chicago (Central) Time and at 12 noon Indian Standard Time.

CTU families assembled at the temple at 8:45 AM for the festivities to begin at 9 AM. The function began with CTU children receiving the blessings of Lord Venkateswara after the chanting of the Venkatesha Suprabhatham. This was followed by a soul-filling rendition of 12 Utsava Sampradaya Krithis (USK) by CTU children trained on these Krithis over the years. This was possible thanks to the cooperation of the Chicago area teachers as well as Rajeswari Pariti who is the coach and conductor for this group of children.

The cornerstone of the Abhivandanam function is the Vada Mala offering to Lord Hanuman by the CTU community of well-wishers. After the CTU USK performance, the children led the way in offering prayers to Lord Rama. While Lord Hanuman was being decorated in preparation for the Vada Mala offering, CTU group of children and adults rendered the Hanuman Chalisa following the M.S.Subbalakshmi style of rendering this immortal composition. Maragatham Sundaresan trained this CTU group on Hanuman Chalisa over the past few months.

After the Hanuman Chalisa performance, the community gathered to offer the Vada Mala to Lord Hanuman. The Vadais were distributed to one and all on this festive, joyous occasion followed by Prasadam.

Over the years, CTU has worked to instill a practice of CTU families donating one dollar to the temple when the priests bring the Arathi to the devotees. This has come to be a hallmark of CTU performances at the local temples. CTU children attending the Abhivandanam function donated at least one dollar to the temple during the Utsava Abhivandanam function.

CTU acknowledges the following children who participated in the Abhivandanam function in alphabetical order of their last name.
